Saar-Hunsrück-Steig

Experience the diversity of the Hunsrück! The Saar-Hunsrück Climb is ideal for enthusiastic and active hikers.

The Saar-Hunsrück Climb is special... and different from other long-distance hiking trails. It is the premium long-distance trail with the highest proportion of natural paths (75% of the way) and only 4% of the route is on asphalt. And that over 415 kilometers and 27 stages...

The route: Extraordinary! There are three start and end points. For example, it leads from the Roman city of Trier via the Hunsrück to Boppard on the Rhine. But you can also start in Perl and walk through northern Saarland and then decide at the Keller Steg (wayside cross) near Hermeskeil in the Hunsrück whether you want to continue hiking in the direction of Trier to the Moselle or to Boppard in the direction of the Rhine.

Rating "German Hiking Seal"

With the "German Hiking Seal" as a premium trail, the Saar-Hunsrück Climb has the highest award that a hiking trail can achieve in Europe. Among other things, the seal evaluates the quality of experience of a hiking trail and the quality of its signage. Of the previously certified long-distance hiking trails, it achieved the highest result with 65 experience points. Further information on the hiking seal: www.deutscheswanderinstitut.de

Path condition

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a natural path, 70% of which is on forest floor, grass paths or along streams. Therefore, sturdy shoes are strongly recommended.

Signage

The signposting of the Saar-Hunsrück Climb is "unmissable" and is checked at least four times a year by the trail attendants. The entire trail is continuously marked with the logo. All prominent forks in the path are equipped with signposts and show both the direction of travel and the direction of origin and the near, middle and long-distance destinations. Since the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is designed as a natural path, it usually does not lead through towns. There are access routes that lead to the next town. At the beginning of the access road, a signpost shows the distance to the next town.

In addition, there are now uniform information boards at many locations that provide information about the nearest hosts (telephone number, opening times, days off, etc.).

Philosophy

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig offers pleasure hiking with trekking character at the highest level.

Peculiarities of the climb

The unique selling point: It is characterized by a particularly high proportion of nature trails (60%). This is unique in Europe. The skilful routing offers a mix of narrow paths and wider paths that wind through quiet and varied nature. The trail avoids places as much as possible and leads almost exclusively through untouched landscape. The natural silence is always in the foreground when hiking on the Saar-Hunsrück Climb.

Scenic highlights

Experience the diversity! The high adventure value of the climb results from the diversity of nature: Bizarre rocks, wonderfully winding streams, vineyards, different forest formations, high moors, wonderful valleys and fantastic views make the path enormously varied. The Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park are crossed. There are also a number of cultural and historical highlights such as the Grimburg, the Wildenburg or the Celtic ring wall. The trail has a demanding profile with a trekking character: in constant alternation through valleys and over heights, it allows you to cross three landmarks.

Rest and enjoy

The trail offers pleasure hiking at the highest level. The numerous benches are set up in particularly beautiful places. You can experience the popular "sensory benches" at numerous vantage points. Pleasure hiking also means gastronomy geared towards hikers. More than 60 "Wanderbares Deutschland Quality Hosts" on the trail or a short distance away look forward to your visit.
